Every great project starts with an idea in the mind of a person. That idea is then exposed to others and the project is born. Kaskaskia Valley Audubon Society was started in somewhat the same way. In the fall of 1996 several people, in pursuing other projects, talked to each other and found they each had a similar idea. That idea was to have an Illinois Audubon Society (IAS) chapter in Southwestern Illinois. A few other like-minded people were invited to form a core group to see if it was a feasible project.
During a year’s time, three public meetings were held and a few small projects were completed, before we applied for chapter status in IAS. In the first month of the membership campaign, the group had gathered fifty-four members. In July of 1997 this group of interested and enthusiastic members was accepted as a chapter of IAS with the name of Kaskaskia Valley Audubon Society.
In the years since its inception KVAS has hosted the state organization for both a fall (2001) and spring (2006) meeting, monthly meetings with very interesting speakers on a continuous basis, local field trips and workshops, spring and Christmas bird counts, stewardship days at Knobeloch Woods Nature Preserve, sponsored trips to a hawk watch in Michigan, trips to see Sandhill Cranes in Nebraska, and to see Saw-whet Owls in Wisconsin.
Our meetings and field trips are always open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
